Business Card Images and Symbols
We remember in pictures, not in words, which is one reason why graphics and logos and photos are so important when you’re trying to establish a business identity or brand. Very often, we react to images at a subconscious and highly emotional level. In fact, some pictures do a better job than words can ever do at conveying abstract concepts.
For example, a flag stands for a country and all that it represents, but it would be difficult to find a single word that evokes the same kind of emotional response as the image of the flag does.
So you need to be very careful about the symbols and images you use on your business cards.
They have to look good (graphically well-designed, right size and proportion, something that looks good in black and white and/or when photocopied or faxed) – but they have to evoke the right emotional responses, too.
That means they have to be easy to recognize, a good representation of a related thing (a birthday cake might symbolize getting older, making wishes, or getting gifts), unique and something timeless – not dated (unless you’re trying to appeal to a specific demographic group for whom that image would have particular meaning.)
If you can find an image that triggers the senses or affects emotions in a positive way and relate it to your business, start using it on your business cards and in your other communications.
