Sick of Rectangles? Go Circle!

T.G.I.F.  Again.  Right?  We’re at the weekend again, and we know that you know the drill by now, we’re gonna get you out and enjoying the weekend as quick as possible!  As you well know by now, there are TONS of ways to make sure that your business card really pops out and looks amazing.  All of these come in the design stage, which you also know.  Here’s another one I think we’ve mentioned before, but nevertheless it’s just so easy to implement, why not try again?round

When all others go rectangle, why not try a batch of circles?!  By including even a small handful of circular designed business cards into your arsenal, you’re making positively sure that you can switch things up and really impress people by doing nothing other than handing them a circular card, instead of a standard one.  Take a glance at the business card above…I’m not saying the card would look bad as a rectangle, as clearly it’s designed very well, but how much MORE impressive is it as a circle?!

If you don’t feel like going full out and paying for die-cut circle shaped cards but still want a completely different feel and look from the standard sharp-cornered rectangles, head to OvernightPrints.com and order up some new rounded-corner business cards.  They are the quickest, cheapest and best way to throw some simple creativity into your design without breaking the bank.  Truth be told, they are exactly the cards I’m using right now.

Enjoy your weekend and we’ll see you Monday Morning!!

Finish Your Homework! Clean Your Plate!

Okay, so Mom’s advice was good, most of the time. Finishing what you start, staying the course, being in it for the long haul – all good advice.

But not when it comes to outdated business cards.  You do NOT have to stick with business cards that have the wrong address or phone number on it, or with a photo that’s 10 years old, or that have your old title.  In fact, you probably SHOULDN’T stick with those cards.

DO NOT FINISH THE BOX!

It is perfectly okay to pitch business cards that not only present you inaccurately, but hurt your credibility.  Who wants to get a scratched out, written over business card?  Good grief, can’t you afford $40 to present yourself in a professional way?  We’re not talking precious metal here (well, Tyler’s probably found some business card made of gold or platinum, but I digress…)

I understand wanting to make the most of what you’ve already spent, but cards like that cost you more than it costs to replace them, at least when you go with an affordable business card printer like OvernightPrints.com.  If you absolutely MUST do something with those old cards, use them as bookmarks, prop up that wobbly desk, or line a bird cage with ‘em.

Will Business Cards Become Extinct? We Think Not…

Last week, my esteemed colleague Diana did an excellent post on the future of the business card, and the belief shared by some that with advances in technology, we eventually won’t need them at all.  A few people out there think that with new methods of transferring information about ourselves digitally over cell phones and computers will eradicate the need to still print and hand out little pieces of paper with our information on it.dub_iphone

There’s a lot of hullabaloo about this lately, and articles are turning up everywhere saying that before long we won’t need them.  I agree with Diana, this is so wrong.  First and foremost, the ability to transmit data digitally means that both parties would have to have the correct equipment, AND would have to either be present, or at least set it up to allow the aforementioned transmission.  Gone would be the days of leaving your business card somewhere and someone picking it up, now you’d have to Be there to receive and transmit it.  Furthermore, in order to pass the card around, or to give it to someone else, both parties would again have to have the correct equipment and allow the transfer.

Also, gone would be the days of design.  Business cards and their beautiful, unique and creative designs would vanish and all business cards would be plain and simple lines of data and code.  In essence, gone would be the flair, the flash and the style we’re all so keen on giving them today.  How boring?

Nevertheless, it’s an interesting article and cool to see what kind of technology is going to try its best to dethrone the business card.  Check it out!

Not Just Another Pretty Card

You’re not just another pretty face.

Not just another car dealer.  Not just another insurance agent.  Not just another restaurant owner.  Not just another… well, you get the idea.

And your business card is NOT just another pretty card, or at least it shouldn’t be!

Tyler does a great job of coming up with pretty, amazing, and even outlandish business cards.  They’re fun to look at and they can give you some great ideas.  Standing out from your competitors is always smart.

But don’t forget that a business card is NOT about being pretty or clever.  It’s not about the looks at all.  Sure, having a business card that’s attractive is desirable, but it’s not really the point.

What really counts is that your business card is an effective marketing tool. It somehow or another conveys the impression that you’re worth remembering.  Being remembered because you have a cool card is great – but if that’s ALL they remember you for, you’ve missed something.

You want to be remembered for something much more fundamental than your “pretty” business card – you want people to remember you because they might want to do business with you!

Use the advice on this website to help you get the fundamentals in place – and THEN order “pretty” business cards at OvernightPrints.com!

Anybody Want a Peanut?!

Hello and Happy Monday!  We’re gonna kick things off by showing you something that belongs directly in the “What will they think of next” file.  That’s right, this little original business card thinks so far outside the box, it doesn’t even USE the box.  We’ve seen business cards printed on crazy materials before, everything from metal to wood to even beef jerky, but what we haven’t seen is today’s…until now.peanut

Yep, we’ve found maybe the most unique use of another material yet…a peanut.  That’s right, the card above is literally printed on a peanut!  Imagine the looks on people’s faces when you hand them a bag of peanuts instead of a box of business cards!  Heck, if they are careful and hungry, they can even eat the business card peanuts without damaging the shells and keep the contact information in tact!

While this type of card might not be advisable for everyone, in every industry, if you were in the food industry, or maybe even professional sports, I can see this being the PERFECT head-turner and conversation starter to get the ball rolling for new business, or even just maintaining existing clients.  What will they think of next?  Business cards on donuts?  On Pets?  What next?!

Nevertheless, it’s something to keep in mind as you build your business cards:  How can YOU make yourself stand out with one simple piece of paper?  Figure that out, and you’re onto something big.

Tear Here: The Business Card That Reveals

Hello and welcome back to Friday!  That’s right, the weekend is upon us and we can finally go out and do all those things we’ve been meaning to do, but just haven’t done yet.  That said, if you’re anything like us, the business card we’re featuring today might just be your favorite you’ve seen.  Think about this for a moment:  When you get a package in the mail, if you’re not quite sure what it is, how satisfying is it to pull that long FedEx pull-tab and hear the little rip noise before you see inside?  Yeah, us too.tear-here

That said, I just found a business card that combines that sound, that action and that satisfaction and the revelation of the actual business card details.  In a word:  Amazing.  I have no idea where these were printed, or who does them but I have to say they are some of the most genius business cards we’ve seen in a long, long time.

Nevertheless, it IS the weekend now and we’ll keep things short.  Have a perfect weekend and we’ll see you back here bright and early Monday morning

Let Your Customers Improve Your Card

One great way to improve your business card is to ask your customers for their input – and if you’re savvy, you’ll turn this into a publicity event.

People love to be asked for advice and they also love to win prizes.

So why not ask your clients, vendors, employees, suppliers etc to help you improve your business card?  Announce a contest of some sort and publicize it (flyers, inserts in newsletters or customer mailings, etc)- make sure you show your current business card on it and ask for ideas for improvement.  Give some sort of nice prize to encourage people to participate.

And be sure to announce the winner, show the revised card, and thank people for all their help!

You may not get one single BIG  suggestion that’s going to transform your business card into a marketing powerhouse – but odds are you’ll get lots of LITTLE suggestions that will honestly help you craft a better card.

Better yet, you’ll have fostered positive interactions with people who are important to the success of your business.

You can even carry this a step further and ask for customer input on other aspects of your marketing and message.

The Business Card That Grows On You

I think we’ve featured business cards on this blog before that have similar ideas, but I have to say the one we found today might just take the cake as the absolute smartest use of living things to make a business card that goes from pretty ordinary to absolutely extraordinary in no time at all.  The business card below belongs to that of a landscape architect, and I have to say if you’re trying to promote yourself as an amazing landscaper, there really is no better way than this card.landscape-architect

As you can see, the card uses actual plant seeds inside to grow actual plants outside of the business card to represent tiny trees in a landscape blueprint.  Before the seeds grow the card just appears to have holes in it, but if given at the right time, or if kept for long enough, the card will actually bloom and before you know it, you’re looking at not only a business card, but a miniature model of a blueprint and completely “tree’d” in area.  If you’re looking for a landscape architect and someone handed you this card, be honest, how quickly would you consider seriously hiring them?  Yeah, us too…instantly.

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a thousand times here, the best way to have your business card do some seriously smart marketing for you is to have your business card tell everything your business stands for for you, immediately.  By going with a unique card like this, you are making pretty darn sure you’ll never be forgotten.

You’ll Burn Your Business Cards in 2010

At least, that’s what it says in an article, “8 Tech Trends for 2010″, posted on the FoxNews.com website.

Here’s what it says:

###

You’ll burn your business cards

Salespeople hand them out at trade shows and they might help you win a free lunch. That’s right: business cards just won’t die. Several iPhone apps – such as Beezcard and SnapDat – allow you to share contact details, but not everyone has an iPhone. A Swiss company has made the PokenZoo, a cute, inexpensive device you touch to another Poken to swap contacts.

Why the trend is important: Saves paper, but also finally alleviates business workers from having to carry these annoying cards around whether they go.
###

I’ve just gotta disagree with this one.

To begin with, just as everyone doesn’t have an iPhone, everyone doesn’t have (and won’t have) a PokenZoo, or whatever technology they come up with in another year to share contact information.  62% of small businesses don’t even have a website yet, according to a survey from April 2009 on Entrepreneur’s web site.  So I don’t think we can yet assume that everyone’s ready to give up their low-tech marketing media like businescards.

And second, the very proliferation of all these new ways to communicate make it even more important to have ONE place where all that info is written down.  A business card is a handy way to keep cell phone numbers and Twitter IDs and Facebook pages in one convenient, portable, easy-to-store way.

Finally – there’s something in the person-to-person business card exchange that I don’t think will be easily replicated electronically.  A business card is often just as much about the personal connection as it is about the card itself.  It’s a way to leave something positive and memorable behind – something tangible.

I guess only time will tell which of us is right – but I’m gambling that business cards will continue to be a viable and effective tool for decades to come!

Business Card Tip: Distressed to Impress

Hello and welcome back to the work week!  Hopefully you don’t have TOO large of a candy hangover and all of your Halloween haunting went safely and productively.  I’m sure your kids and your dentist will both be appreciative.  Nevertheless, we’re back and to kick things off this week we wanted to hit you with a business card design tip:  Distress to Impress!vintage

That’s right, when it comes to designing your next business card, why not take a cue from the business card above and throw in a little distressed, vintage, old-school style to your design?  As you well know, everything from jeans to artwork to wallpaper is being popularly distressed these days, so why wouldn’t business cards deserve the same exact treatment?  Look how effectively these cards combine the old-school logo with some faux-distressing on the sides and top.  It makes the card look like it’s perfectly vintage while still perfectly cool.  That, my friends is a powerful combination.

So, when you go about designing your next batch, try your hand at a few distressed versions.  What do you have to lose?  I think the best arsenal of business cards is one in which you have the perfect card for nearly every situation nearly every client and nearly every different style.  While this isn’t exactly reasonable, I suppose at the prices you can get business cards for nowadays, it sure could be.

Don’t forget to send us your newest and best designs!  We’d love to feature some!
